American English

Learning American English? Here's a great collection of American English language learning resources to help you get fluent in American English!

Links

  1. All Ears English Podcast – Okay, I love this one because part of language learning is learning about the culture. Any podcast or website with the phrase ‘Understanding Americans' has my vote!
  2. Amigos Ingleses – for Spanish speakers or you could learn two languages at once!
  3. Business English Pod: Learn Business English Online – Are you trying to learn Business English? Looks like this podcast is right up your alley.
  4. EnglishAnyone – YouTube channel that focuses on conversational English.
  5. English with Jennifer – YouTube channel that will you go beyond the basics. She uploads a new video every Thursday.
  6. Fluency MC – YouTube channel that teaches you English through rhyme. It may sound silly, but it works!
  7. Grammarly – grammar never dies.  I use the extensions for my browser and have the desktop app. It's possibly my most used app. This is more to practice your writing and have it correct any syntax mistakes.
  8. italki – perfect for a more personalized language learning experience. They also have an app and you can pay per lesson!

Apps

  1. Beelinguapp: Learn Languages with Audiobooks free with in-app purchases. Available for iOS and Android, I love this app. You can read and listen to books in two languages.
  2. Duolingo – FREE. I know many folks who don't like Duolingo, but it has its upsides. It's easy to start; download the app or head to their site and start learning. I especially love chatting with the bots and trying to earn more lingots (in video game speak, cash, coins, and rubies) to unlock more culture lessons.
  3. English with Andy: Chat & Learnfree with in-app purchases. As a native English speaker, I was impressed by this app. Duolingo has something similar as part of its language learning arsenal. You can tap on the speaker to hear the sentence. The paid version has three tiers: $ 1.98 a month, $0.83 a month (roughly $9.99), and a one-time payment of $29.99. The Premium version includes 35+ grammar lessons, and unlimited vocabulary, which means Andy will remind you of words you've learned before you forget them and more conversation topics. The chatbot is well a chatbot, and it will sound like one.  Available for iOS and Android.
  4. Hemmingway Editor $19.99; available for Mac OSX and Windows. If you would like to improve your writing, this editor will help tremendously.
  5. Speak and Translate by Apalon Appsfree with in-app purchases. Available for iOS only.
  6. Speak: Practice Your EnglishFREE.  Speakeasy Labs makes several language-learning apps, so this one is no surprise! It will start by asking you if you are a native English speaker and then select a ‘person' to talk to you at your appropriate learning level. After selecting ‘yes,' I got Carl, the Developer, whose English sounded more like a person's. They've got all the nuances down!  Available for iOS only.

My Second Language

Surprisingly, American English is my second language, and I'm learning new things daily. What do I use frequently? Grammarly, and I read and write like nobody's business.
