A Visit to Tehran
I love watching Rick Steves’ Europe. Since I’ve watched pretty much every episode and even have them on DVD, I was elated when he traveled outside of Europe and into Iran. It only piqued my interest and would love to go to Tehran and Persepolis someday. Until then I will watch this video on repeat.
Learning Persian (Fārsī) has made me appreciate Iranian culture and its people. I intend to continue learning the language past the 31 Day Aspiring Polyglot Challenge. At my local library, I found the Start Speaking Today! Persian audio course by Lang30 and currently waiting for a few more courses to become available. Even with all of the studying I have been doing, I must use the language in real life situations. Maybe it’s time for a trip to Tehrangeles.
Visiting Tehrangeles “Little Persia”
Did you know that the largest community of Iranians outside of Iran live in Los Angeles? Los Angeles recognizes the district at the intersection of Westwood Boulevard and Wilkins Avenue as Persian Square. The AJ+ docuseries talks about the Iranian communities in Los Angeles and goes as far to dispel stereotypes. It was one of those things I came across while mindlessly scrolling through social media.
First stop will be that ice cream shop. In case you were wondering. Mashti Malone‘s is located at 1525 N La Brea Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90028-7072.
Then, It’s All Good House of Kabob 6800 Reseda Blvd, Reseda, CA 91335.
Life is short, eat dessert first!
Here’s the second part: Iranian in LA.
Warring Factions is Justin Mashouf’s documentary about breakdancing and Iranian cultural misunderstandings. He visits Iran for a b-boy battle and talks about how he was held for questioning by Homeland Security upon returning from his trip.
Chloe Pourmorady is the Persian-American violinist and songwriter based in Los Angeles. She sings in Persian.
