DAY 13: #31DayAspiringPolyglot Challenge – Learning Persian (Fārsī)

سالی که نکوست٬ از بهارش پیداست

sāli ke nekust, az bahāraš peydāst

“If the beginning is good, the end must be perfect.”
Literally, “A good year is evident in its Spring.”

Finding Movies and TV Shows in Persian (Fārsī)

YouTube is always my go-to for TV shows and movies in foreign languages. Netflix is another alternative. That is, for movies and TV shows with English subtitles. However, for Persian (Fārsī), I had plenty to choose from if all I wanted was to listen and not understand anything for a half hour. Yes, I could definitely figure out what a conversation is about based on the situation, but this time around, I needed a crutch. I wanted to be able to follow the conversations on screen at a normal speaking pace to familiarize myself with everyday situations. I love learning about cultural body language differences, too.

When I'm ready, SquidTV with its multitude of Iranian television channels and radio stations will be there waiting for me.

What Did I End Up Watching?

I found two short films that intrigued me. The first one called The Story of Khosrow deals with a man who is fleeing from Iran due to religious persecution. I thought this was going to be the story of Khosrow and Shirin (also known as Shirin and Farhad), a famous Persian tragic love story written by the poet Nizami Ganjavi. Not what I was expecting at all. It's a bit heavy for my taste, but for the sake of learning, I gave it a go.

The second is a documentary called Teheran Kitchen. Anything with food and culture is totally my jam. I found this on YouTube. Although the video is a bit grainy, I enjoyed it more than the first short film I watched. You can see the art of negotiation at the market, a thing of beauty if you ask me! I've heard that Iranians learn how to negotiate before they can walk. Iranian chefs talking about life and their work at the university kitchen is quite fascinating. Expect to get the munchies!
