DAY 2: #31DayAspiringPolyglot Challenge – Learning Persian (Fārsī)

.دوست آن باشد که گیرد دست دوست در پریشان حالی و درماندگی

Dust ân bâšad ke girad dast-e dust dar parišân hâli o darmândegi.

English equivalent: A friend is known in adversity, like gold is known in fire; A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Fārsī or Persian?

It's one of those things that people feel strongly about. I've heard some scholars reject the word fārsī and prefer to call the language Persian. So from here on out, I will use Persian and place Fārsī in parentheses. I have made the proper adjustments to yesterday's post and have updated the graphic in the language learning resources page.

Where is this language spoken?

Persian (Fārsī) has approximately 70 million native speakers and 110 million speakers worldwide. It is spoken in Iran (Persia), Afghanistan (Dari dialect), Tajikistan (Tajik/Tajiki dialect), Uzbekistan (also Tajik/Tajiki dialect), Iraq, Russia and Azerbaijan.

Tajik/Tajiki Persian is written using the Cyrillic alphabet. I think I just broke my brain.

Persian (Fārsī) Language Learning Resources

I spent the majority of the evening yesterday and well into early this morning looking for Persian (Fārsī) language learning resources. If you're learning Persian (Fārsī), check out the resources here. I will be updating the page throughout the 31 Day Aspiring Polyglot Challenge.
